The FireFly LED lighting system can be used for many safety-related lighting applications in an underground tunnel environment.

The Main Benefits of the FireFly Smart Lighting System

Quick and Effective Area/Zone Management:
  • One FireFly LED module can be deployed as a standalone unit, but the potential of the system is realised when multiple FireFly LED modules are connected to form a string. Each string can support the connection of up to 30 FireFly modules.
  • This connectivity feature of the FireFly modules can then provide a more accurate demarcation of go and no-go areas of a tunnel, as each string can be broken up into multiple zones. Each zone’s colour and mode of operation can also be independently selected.
Real-Time Demarcation of Seismic Zones With Immediate Evacuation When a Fire Occurs:
  • The backwards and forwards train mode enables the FireFly strings to provide an evacuation guidance function. Either to exit a certain high-risk area or to guide workers towards the nearest refuge chamber or point of egress.
An Additional Layer of Warning During An Emergency Event:
  • The strobing function allows for the FireFly system to provide real-time emergency awareness to the underground workforce.
Access Control, Asset Tracking & Real-Time Situational Awareness:
  • Bluetooth beacon tags come in a wide range of form factors, with multiple technologies built into the one tag
    • Personnel card tag (2yr battery life)
      • Bluetooth
      • Mifare
      • NFC
    • Vehicle tag (4yr battery life)
  • Each person and vehicle operating in the tunnel can be detected by the FireFly lights. Their location data can then be shown via a virtual tagboard or sent to a third-party tracking system via an API.
  • FireFly lights can be deployed at key locations around the tunnel network to provide a zone-based tracking system. Access control points enable workers to enter turnstile gates and swipe at swipe card readers located in various zones, including surface and underground zones, safe zones, and construction zones.
