Applications – Emergency Evacuation Management
Problem:
Underground mining environments are high-risk, with limited visibility and loud ambient background noise. Visual alerts are critical, but in low-light conditions or areas filled with dust and machinery, they can be easily missed.
During emergencies such as gas leaks or blasting operations, relying solely on visual signals increases the risk of miscommunication and delayed response.
Mines need a reliable, site-wide communication system that ensures workers receive clear, timely alerts across all working areas, even in the most challenging conditions.
Solution:
The FireFly Siren by IoT Automation integrates seamlessly with the FireFly smart lighting network, creating a unified communication system that combines visual and audible alerts to support safer underground operations.
Designed for underground mining and tunnelling environments, the FireFly Siren is compact, rugged and built to operate reliably in harsh mining conditions. It connects inline with existing FireFly lighting strings using the standard FireFly connector, allowing fast, plug-and-play installation without additional infrastructure.
Operating on 12–60VDC at just 4W, the FireFly Siren is power efficient by design. An integrated Li-Po battery backup ensures alerts remain active during power interruptions, maintaining communication continuity when it is most critical.
With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity, the FireFly Siren is managed through the IoT Hive web platform, enabling centralised configuration, scheduling and automated responses. Audible alerts can also be triggered manually or automatically based on events such as blasting activities or environmental sensor thresholds.
The FireFly Siren can also be mounted on mobile machinery or fixed plant infrastructure as a stand-alone device, creating mobile safety zones and extending coverage into areas where FireFly lighting strings may not be installed.
Benefits:
By combining audible alerts with visual signalling, the FireFly Siren improves clarity and reduces the risk of missed or misunderstood warnings in underground environments where high ambient noise, dust and low visibility are constant challenges.
Clear, consistent alerts help workers respond faster during emergencies, blasting operations and evacuations, reducing confusion and supporting safer decision-making across all working areas.
Centralised control and automation through the IoT Hive platform reduce reliance on manual signalling and site-specific workarounds, improving operational consistency and reliability.
The result is a more resilient underground communication layer that adapts to changing operational conditions, supports safer workflows and strengthens overall site safety without increasing system complexity.
