Vehicle congestion on underground decline ramps is common in modern mechanised mines. Two-way traffic operating along one-way roads presents many safety and operational concerns for mine operators. Complicate this with low illumination levels, steep grades, slippery road surfaces, reduced visibility and a mixture of large, small, fast, slow and even non-reversible machinery.  

These issues do not just present risks to the safety of underground personnel, but it also affects day-to-day operations and productivity. Current industry controls are generally limited to radio calls being made as vehicles travel past key locations, on their way up or down the decline. This method can be somewhat helpful but is prone to error. Either location calls are not being made, not being understood, or being missed altogether. 

That only then leaves sight and sound: Drivers looking out for the headlights of oncoming vehicles to be a trigger to take evasive action, or for the sound of an oncoming vehicle. Both methods, again, at some stages, can be helpful. But both are also prone to not providing an early enough warning indication to drivers as to what type of vehicle is approaching them and how long they have before that vehicle reaches their location.
